Winter Camping advice from Jeff King 4 time Iditarod Champion

Last night I watched the 1st espisode of “Toughest Race on Earth: Iditarod - The Last Great Race” last night on the Discovery Channel.  The show is a six-part reality series from The Discovery Channel which follows eight teams in the annual Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.  The race took place last March, so we know who won, but the show so far provides further insight into the 8 teams being profiled.

A brief line by 4-time Iditarod winner Jeff King last night seemed so relevant to winter camping.  The show was depicting one of the lay-over check points where a lot of the teams were stopping for a brief rest.  Jeff King took a different approach.  He re-supplied with food, loaded a bale of straw on his sled to be spread as beds for his dogs, and headed a few miles down the trail. His rationale was it only took a few minutes more to leave the noise, crowding and confusion behind to find a nice, quiet, site for his rest stop.

It’s a lot like winter camping.  One doesn’t have to go very far during the winter to leave all the bustle behind.  A mile or two into the woods one can usually find seemingly untouched snow covered areas.
